Observations
Gunnera carpeting the summit of Volcán Arenal above the cloud line
Plant
Dense carpet of Gunnera insignis covering the upper slopes of Volcán Arenal above the cloud line. Leaves massive, heavily textured with a rough almost reptilian surface — an adaptation to intense UV exposure, wind, and temperature swings at elevation. Growing directly from volcanic rock substrate with minimal visible soil. The plant dominates completely at this elevation, forming a continuous low canopy across the summit area. Below was a full sea of clouds. One of the most alien plant environments I've encountered — thriving in conditions that look completely inhospitable.
